Primates Program

Contributing to the protection of Vietnam's endemic and Critically Endangered primates from extinction.

Program overview

Vietnam is one of the world's most important countries for primate conservation, with 25 species - the highest in Southeast Asia. However, more than 90% of species are threatened, with many endemic and Critically Endangered species surviving only in small, fragmented, and vulnerable populations. Protecting these threatened populations has become an urgent concern not only for the Government of Vietnam but also for the international community. On 10 May 2017, the Prime Minister's Office issued Decision No. 628/QD-TTg approving the Emergency Action Plan for Primate Conservation in Vietnam to 2025, with a vision to 2030.

In 2024, Conservation Vietnam took over coordination of the Vietnam Primates Program from Fauna & Flora Vietnam, the first national-scale program focused on five priority primate species: the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey, Delacour's langur, Grey-shanked douc, Cat Ba langur, and Cao Vit gibbon.

Protected focus species

Tonkin snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus avunculus)

Tonkin snub-nosed monkeyRhinopithecus avunculus

An extremely rare primate endemic to Vietnam, recognizable by its pale blue face, upturned nose, thick lips, and black-and-white coat. It is among the world's most endangered primates, with fewer than 100 individuals remaining.

Delacour's langur (Trachypithecus delacouri)

Delacour's langurTrachypithecus delacouri

Distinguished by its black coat and striking white rump and thighs. The species occurs only in Vietnam and remains at very low numbers in the wild.

Grey-shanked douc (Pygathrix cinerea)

Grey-shanked doucPygathrix cinerea

A visually distinctive primate with grey legs, a yellow-orange face, and a long white tail. It is considered one of the world's most beautiful primates.

Cat Ba langur (Trachypithecus poliocephalus)

Cat Ba langurTrachypithecus poliocephalus

Recognized by its golden head against a dark grey-black body, this is one of the rarest primates in the world and is found only on Cat Ba.

Cao Vit gibbon (Nomascus nasutus)

Cao Vit gibbonNomascus nasutus

Known for morning duet calls that help define territory and maintain bonds between individuals in the group.

From 2025 to 2030, the program, with the involvement of at least five national and international organizations, aims to protect critically endangered primate populations through scientific research, habitat restoration, conservation management support, and strengthening community participation.

Conservation effect

A science-based national primate conservation model that helps recover and sustain Vietnam's most threatened primate populations.

Expected outcomes

  1. Strengthen protection for five Critically Endangered primate species.
  2. Improve law enforcement effectiveness and population monitoring systems.
  3. Increase community participation in priority primate landscapes.
